Food for Thought

Great piece from The American Conservative on local food:

Respect for tradition and social and ecological responsibility can work together with technological innovation and capitalist resourcefulness to respect the ridges and valleys of regionalism in an increasingly flattened world.

I don’t usually find myself thumbing through the pages of American Conservative, this link is via Bittman’s blog.

I reformatted the comments and misc. stuff at the bottom of the WBB. Have a look. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

Mountain Bike Race, Saturday AM

IMG_8992.CR2

There’s a race over at Tatum Park this weekend. I’m going to do it but I’d be more psyched if someone did it with me. Any takers. It’s only 7.5 miles and Tatum is an easy ride compared Hartshorn or Huber. Drop me an email or comment f you’re interested.

Another Children’s Poem

Have you ever heard a lion roar
right outside your kitchen door?
It’s a sound that you’d implore,
“Don’t make near me anymore!”

Follow up on Critical Mass Video

I’m not sure this excerpt from a nj.com article following up on this earlier video post really needs any commentary but I’ll boldface the eyebrow-raising lines:

Christopher Long, a onetime pedicab operator, was charged with knocking down a cop with his bike and then resisting arrest Friday at around 9:35 p.m. in midtown Manhattan during a Critical Mass cyclist rights demonstration.

But a clip posted anonymously on YouTube.com shows Long absorbing a body block by rookie NYPD Officer Patrick Pogan. Long was charged with attempted assault, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. In the criminal complaint, Pogan (the NYPD officer) claimed Long rode his bike “directly” into his body, causing him to suffer cuts to his forearms. Long is due back in court Sept. 5, officials said.

Tuesday, the New York police union defended Pogan, saying he was protecting the public from Long, the New York Daily New reported.
