I wonder if the departure of Pigpen from the band in June of 1972 had anything to do with it. It seems that after Europe '72 they loosened up the tunes a little more and took them from blues based approaches, to funkier jazz grooves. Whatever it was, I dig it.

It's interesting how they could get in the pocket this way, esp in '74 and the few shows from '75. There are other songs from '72 and '73 that have a similar thing going on when they are newer and still getting put through the paces. I'll have to give more examples, but the "Bird Song" from Dick's Picks #36 is illustrative (9/21/72 in Philly). Really jazzy stuff from Bob. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUmDjKO_-KE

man, that's an awesome find. I can't tell if Billy is really playing as funky as he sounds or if we're just missing the mic on some of his drums or something. it's got a great feel to it when Phil keeps it together. this is definitely one of my favs of this song though. Phil's playing reminds me of Lecesse at times.
