I’ve been getting back into the Dead after reading Phil’s book. In addition to the Internet Archive for streaming/downloads, I found this blog, the Grateful Dead Listening Guide (GDLG). The author is a good writer and it’s a great way to navigate the awesome amount of music available.

Great link Rpm. I too have been “re-discovering” The Dead lately and that blog is a like a treasure map. Thanks. Thought Phil’s book was pretty decent too.

for those that have Sirius radio and don’t already know…channel 32 is the GD channel 24/7.
there are also 2 Grateful Dead radio stations that you can stream through your iTunes. It’s under “classic rock” The first one ‘gdradio.net’ has no commercials. ‘radioDead’ has commercials.
Enjoy the ice storm with some Dead! cuz
Learning to appreciate the special quality of some of these AUDs. Earbuds/headphones work best for that “in the crowd” illusion. Others - esp. the Wall of Sound stuff from ‘74 - sound great in the living room. My 4 mo. old is getting a headfull of this stuff! Also, just figured out how to rip streams. Is this old news? Trying to be on the DL…
RPM, what do you use to rip streams? I have had good results with replay music, but it costs $20. however, it separates tracks and puts them right into iTunes.

Happy holidays. cuzbry
I use cast ripper - freeware. It also keeps the metadata about each track so that you can load them into itunes, but You have to rename the files by adding a dot before the mp3 extention.
I just finished a little unscientific experiment. Over the last few days I played all the shows I downloaded between ‘72 and ‘74 (basically, all that are reviewed on the GDLG) and scrobbled them to last.fm. There are some songs - like Jack Straw - that got counted a few extra times b/c I was replaying it to learn the chord changes. Mainly, though, the results should reflect the frequency that these songs were played. Of course, it’s only a small sampling of those years. Some crazy deadhead must have crunched the numbers based on actual playlists. Maybe I’ll look that up… Meanwhile: http://www.last.fm/user/sag1971/library/music/Grateful+Dead
Still got my head in this. I posted a comment on the GDLG: http://deadlistening.blogspot.com/2009/02/listening-trail-best-auds-ever.html
Great post RPM! I have spent a lot of time with the listening guide as well and am currently taking a respite as my cup has runneth over with Grateful goodness. I find myself currently immersed in the “Pet Sounds” box set and the genius/madness of Brian Wilson. To quote another genius, “Music, is the best.” Injoy Bry
