Lighting

I’m working on my lighting technique for posed photos. I especially like the way this one came out.

Jackaroni, lookin’ good. I think the light is a bit strong on the left but i ‘m no photographer.

Nice job. What lens are you using (assuming DSLR)?

Very cool Jim. Glad to see you use some DIY in the ebay post as well.

This shot is really pretty cool - make Jack look like surreal mannequin. If that’s what you were going for then you nailed it.

You may want to check out the HDR technique as well (if you haven’t already): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_dynamic_range_imaging

I suggest this only because the picture of Jack reminded me of HDR images I had seen.

I used a canon 50mm (the cheap plastic one. it’s my favorite lens). The picture is almost straight out of the camera, the only “effect” i did was to take out some of the saturation in the reds and ratcheted up the exposure to blow out a bit of the white paper backdrop. I’m not sure what exactly appeals to me about the photo, i think it’s that this is jack’s natural position whenever he comes across something soft and I like the way the over-exposure highlights the array of texture in the shot. I see what CF means about the HDR look. I think the over-exposure gives it a hint of that style. I like the HDR stuff every now and then but it strikes me less as art and more as approximating really bad thomas kinkade paintings.
