I picked up the 8GB iPhone today over in Freehold. I’ve been waiting to replace my Treo for over a month now but decided to wait a few days post-launch to pick mine up (mostly because there was a chance that I might have to shell out a few hundred bucks to replace my lost SD400 that I thankfully located this AM). A few days window between launch and acquisition gave me some time to read up on the reviews and make sure that AT&T wasn’t going to totally drop the ball on this.
The two most thorough reviews I came across were Kottke’s and Gruber’s. I don’t have much to add to what they’ve already written. Activation was a piece of cake. The family plan for Kel and I will be $20 less per month than our old Verizon plan (and I didn’t have data on my old Verizon plan, so apples-to-apples, it’s really $69 less per month).
Am I psyched that I had to take a razor blade to my Shure headphones to get them to fit into the headphone jack? Hell no. But it was minor surgery and I’m glad to have my iTunes library piping through my lovely Shures. The only other gotcha for me was that the IMAP settings which are pulled from my Mac to the iPhone failed to grab my sub-mailboxes (likely due to a IMAP path problem). This should be an easy fix.
The loud built in speaker is a great feature. Jay, Jack and I watched some Muppets on YouTube over lunch. It’s nice that you don’t have to be locked into headphone-confinement to enjoy vids.

Muppets = awesome. Here’s Diz with The Muppets:
