eLiberatica wrap-up

Last week was a blast. I’m still looking for some English overviews of the event so that my friends back here in the states can get a sense of what went on in Brasov. In the meantime you can keep your eyes on technorati and flickr. Also, a bunch of folks asked me for copies of my slides and Lucian said it could be a while before he gets them posted on the eLiberatica site so in the meantime, you can get a PDF of the slides here. Also, my photos from the trip are now up on Flickr.

About six months ago, I got an email from my friend Zak asking if I’d like to help introduce open source software to Romania. That’s exactly what we did last week. I think the presence of Zak, Monty, Brian and Kurt did a tremendous amount to simultaneously boost the credibility of open source in Eastern Europe as well as to give the Romanian open source community a sense of being on the map. The Romanians who attended the events seemed so grateful that we came to their county to speak with them and there was a palpable sense of having set something very big in motion. Lucian deserves a lot of credit for wanting to make such a difference in his home country even though he doesn’t live there any longer.

When I wasn’t talking about open government and free software, I was swapping musical recommendations with Brian who has a seriously prodigious knowledge of good music. I also especially enjoyed hearing about Romanian non-profit and technology initiatives from Bako Mihaly (who also did a write up of my talk here that he assures me is positive ;-) . I’m looking forward to seeing how much progress these folks make over the next year. Until then.

There is enough room for comments to fill in the blogosphere for weeks, but i would only stick to one :) - that is the willis doctrine :) - i would love to see that happening

    Hi Jim,

It was a great pleasure to meet you and to have you like our guest at eLiberatica. I wish to thank you in the name of ROSI members and actually all conference attendees.
