Have been totally swamped this week and have had little time for posting, email, etc. but wanted to give everyone a quick status report.
On Tuesday, I had lunch with the guys from Media-Hive in Red Bank. I’ve only found a handful of people in NJ so far who view technology as more than just a day job. These guys fit that bill and I hope their nascent development shop is massively successful.
I also met with Terry Reidy and some other folks from Asbury. I was really surprised by how quickly Asbury’s upper management understood the benefits of syndicating data, sharing software code and developing social capital through technology. I’d expect some good things to come out of this meeting.
On the house front, we had our inspection which revealed nothing really surprising but a handful of furnace and plumbing problems that we’re hoping the sellers will take care of. Yesterday’s oil-tank sweep was another matter though. The current owners claim no knowledge of an oil tank on the property but the sweep turned one up under their driveway. It’s about $2k to have it removed and have the soil and area certified by NJ’s EPA as being oil-free and we’re putting that obligation back on the seller since that’s a bit of a headache that we don’t want to deal with. So, in case this deal falls through and the seller’s forget they have a tank in the drive way (and a future potential buyer decides to google the street address of the house) i’ll just mention here that 515 7th Avenue in Belmar has an underground oil tank that was–without necessary permitting–filled with sand and needs to be removed.
I’ve also been running like mad lately. There are a handful of things about jersey that whenever I was away I would idealize in my mind. Now that we’re back there are a few cases where the reality of the thing itself is even better than the idealized version. Being able to do long distance runs through fields and trails of the parks in monmouth county is one of those things. Just the feeling of the open space–the availability of more land than I can cover on foot in a good run–is awesome. I’m a bit disappointed that the park system paved a trail through some of the fields at Thompson Park but there are still some great wooded areas and fields to run though and I’ve been hitting them almost every day. The other evening I had to dodge several deer as they ran across the field in front of me. Close enough that I could feel their trail of warmth in the air as I ran past where they’d been.
