So, Daniel Gilbert’s book has been pretty popular on a lot of the psychology blogs and neuroscience research sites. Perhaps rightly so. It is full of interesting and novel research on happiness. Anyway, it’s now made it’s way to the show with zefrank. If you don’t want to wade through the book and the footnotes and the research you can get the whole message in about 90 seconds right here.
“Why We Fight” (Eugene Jarecki)
I just did a bulk Netflix recommendation on this to everyone on my friends list:
Filmed during the Iraq War, this documentary dissects America’s military machine with a keen eye to answering the question: Why does America engage in war? Through personal stories of soldiers, government officials, scholars, journalists and innocent victims, the film examines the political and economic interests and ideological factors, past and present, behind American militarism.
It’s riveting because the story that is used to drive the documentary is that of a retired NY cop whose son dies in WTC on 9/11 and is trying to get his son’s name written on a bomb to be dropped on Iraq. What makes it even more potent is that the director gets such a wide spectrum of input including McCain, William Kristol and Gore Vidal. I highly recommend it.
I’ve been comparing different versions of jazz standards on my iPod, searching by song title. Then I let it run through and see what comes up. This morning I picked the word “When” and went from there. Presently, I’m on apostrophes heading toward quotation marks and parentheses.
