ultra-portable recording devices

So Beedge (and Hol and b) were up visiting this past weekend. It goes without saying that we played a bit more than we usually would because of my new handy dandy Vox amp. It’s small and portable enough that the barrier to getting things setup to play is almost nil. Meaning inertia doesn’t get the better of us and we play more. I wish we had recorded the sessions though and it’s with that in mind that I tap the collective wisdom of the WBB:

I need an ultra portable recording device. Requirements are as follows:

  • No larger than a 3G ipod (deck of cards)
  • 4-8 hour battery life
  • lossless recording with optional encoding/compression OTF for disk space savings
  • built in stereo microphone
  • firewire transfer
  • usb port (or some other input) for using external microphone(s)/mixer

Does such a thing exist?

    one thing that we used to use before setting up the computer with garageband is a mini disk recorder. the sound is pretty damn good, it is small, portable and it has a mic input that allows you to place the mic anywhere you want.

    Didn’t Michael Keaton have something just like that in Night Shift??

    I think Creative is the brand and there is a 1gb mp3 type player that records live streams, voice and stores music. I borrowed one to record a concert but I had the volume up to high so I don’t know if the sound quality is actually good.

    What’s your budget?

    @rpm:
    I think it would depend on feature set. but I’d go anywhere from $250 - $600 depending on quality/features, etc.

    I think it’s the portability or “how easy is it to grab and go” factor. Meaning, when i first bought my ipod a few years ago, it seemed a bit pricey but in hindsight, it’s probably one of the best purchases I’ve ever made in the cost-to-frequency of enjoyment department. Same with my little canon sd400. i’ve almost always got that in my pocket. if it’s super small and wicked easy to operate, it’ll get used a lot making it a worthwhile purchase.

    You will find products from the usual suspects here. There are some things available for less, but for the feature set you are looking for I think you’re going to start around $400. A word of advice, if you want a lifelong personal relationship with a sales rep who will email you incessantly, then buy from Sweetwater. Otherwise, ZZsounds, Musician’s Friend, Bayview Pro Audio, and others have competitive listings w/o the sticky touch.

    Edirol R-09 - list $400:
