Kid-friendly Gardening Suggestions

Parent Hacks has an entry on kid-friendly garden features (big boulders, fountains, safe/edible plants). With summer around the corner and another baby en route I’m going to need some suggestions for the backyard.

First off, I’ve tried for several years to defeat the army of grubs that calls my backyard home. They’re still there. And they’ve moved to the front yard now, too. Which means that a strong wind can uproot huge patches of my lawn (OK, that’s an exaggeration. But it does tear out very easily).

Secondly, I want to do something interesting with an outside play station area. Some sort of big pot or something filled with dirt that jay can dig in and make mud pies in etc. I know he loves the water table at school and this sort of thing looks like just the sort of DIY project that I’d enjoy tackling. Anyone have any suggestions/pictures on a backyard science/mudpie activity table area?

Thirdly, any generic gardening advice for kid friendly backyards. I’m the first to admin that pachysandra and hostas are about as lame as it gets w/r/t gardening but they are both pretty much indestructible. Any more interesting plant suggestions?
