A story about “Rabbit Fur Coat”

by Jenny Lewis with The Watson Twins

My first exposure to this album was to the cover of “handle with care.” I was really disappointed. However, in the context of the entire album the half-assed cover totally works. Difficult to explain why.

I’ve been enjoying the Rilo Kiley material for a couple of years now. Their song arrangements are especially interesting and the lyrics are always interesting. This album is a bit more country/gospel and the genre doesn’t provide for the same flexibility with arrangements but it does allow for the infectious lyrics to take center stage.

Rhode Island Pizza is–for the most part–really bad

but Bob And Timmy’s stands out among the few acceptable pizza joints. Kid friendly.

About the Ports Issue….

Received the following comments from Keith:
I find it really interesting that for the first time the administration is
in the position of making a three sentence argument. For five years they
have successfully justified almost every action by simply saying ‘ 9/11′ ,
‘war on terror’ while the opposition needed to explain WHY violating
individual civil liberties, invading Iraq, spending like crazy might not be
the best course of action in pursuing our enemies. It’s been my theory
since the ‘04 election that most of the electorate are incapable of
understanding a reasoned argument beyond a one sentence sound bite. I
happen to agree with the administration on this one, but find it fascinating to watch the Dems throw the ‘9/11′ stuff back at Bush and watch him try to make a three sentence rebuttal that stands NO chance of political acceptance.

Just a thought.

Some new finds

I stumbled across 43things a while back and didn’t think much of the idea. I could see the utility of the site but could also think of about a zillion other ways to achieve the same end. That, and the first time I checked out the site I walked away thinking that the process of listing things I wanted to do without being able to gain any benefit of context or connections or communication just didn’t seem all that worthwhile.

Funk Suggestions for The Commish

We had dinner a couple of weeks ago with some friends who came back to visit Providence after moving to the godforsaken midwest last year. Anyway, John G. (who some of you will know as the original Commish of the Sat. Statehouse Football League) has a totally respectable knowledge of music and after delving into the typical Parliament/Funkadelic fare, is looking to broaden his funk horizons a bit.

I asked our office’s resident funk expert, Tony, for some suggestions (below). If anyone wants to add to this list, drop a comment. Thanks!

  • Incorporated Thang Band
  • Digital Underground made serious use of P-Funk samples.
  • De La Soul (See above)
  • The Brothers Johnson
