Never underestimate what a small group of concerned state employees can do to change the world

. . .especially when the group is powered by the LAMP stack ;-)

Today we released one of the most valuable and important things I’ve been a part of since I’ve been at the Statehouse. You can read the announcement at the GOCC.
update: here’s the boingboing link.

David Foster Wallace commencement speech

DFW did the commencement speach for Kenyon University. For a while I was very gung-ho about all things DFW. I enjoyed infinite jest and liked some of what i read in A supposedly fun thing . . . but then there was something about the depth of the irony in his writing that made me feel bad for him and his disconnection from the routine of daily life. Then I read his commencement speech. Which is wonderful. And he’s either developed and adjusted (his term) or I was misreading some of his writing. Anyway, the speech is totally worth the 5 minutes it takes to read it.

Podcasting in iTunes 4.9

Upgrading to the latest version of iTunes will get you easy access to managing your podcast subscriptions through the iTunes interface. It’s a great idea though frankly, I just don’t have time to listen to podcasts all that frequently. My commute is about 3 minutes by car, 6 by bike and 20 by foot. And now that it’s africahot all the time now, i haven’t been walking to work as much. That being said, i know a lot of the WB readers do have a commute or have the ability to listen to audio while they do their work so it might be worth checking out. Al Franken’s podcasts from Air America are available. I’m sure additional interesting podcasts will make their way up there soon. The service is still a bit buggy and not up to Apple’s usual user experience standards. Perhaps that’s because they don’t own the entire stack from content to delivery. They’ll learn. They have to, it’s what separates them from alternative operating systems.
Because podcasting is based on RSS which is near and dear to my interests, i was curious to check on how Apple extended the RSS spec to make it integrate more tightly with iTunes and I’m a bit dissapointed. You can read some details over at usefulinc.com. Also, folks have already started to exploit the functionality a bit to make it possible to do one-click subscription to podcasts via iTunes from any site.
