My Cat Dilemma

Cat for sale. Cheap. I’ll pay you! I’ve had Spider for twelve years, and despite a slight case of fatness, he’s funny and sweet-hearted and attentative to the stress-alleviation that comes from laying hand to soft fur. Ah, but I went and got married and I love my wife too much to watch her suffer. As bad luck would have it, she’s allergic to cat fur. It started out mild, but the longer she’s shared a home with my lightly-shedding feline, the worse her allergy has become. I’m weighing options, trying to keep him near enough to visit, praying for solution. I know that I have to find that black cat a new home, and I may be a tough guy (for a dork) but I have a soft spot in my heart for this black bundle of fur stretched out across my bed. So therefore, woe is me. I should have just saved myself all this trouble by getting thirty-nine more cats and becoming the scarey old cat-guy who orders Chinese food three times a day and is occasionally seen peaking out from between the window blinds. But I didn’t become him. I went and got married, and I love my wife, and alas, a sacrifice I must make.

Applications to check out

I’ve come across some OS X apps over the past few days that have been helpful, mostly for doing text-wrangling.

Brooks column on lobbying

(by way of Kent) David Brooks nails a lot of what is wrong w the lobbying process in his NYT column yesterday, best quote:

Ralph Reed, meanwhile, smashed the tired old categories that used to separate social conservatives from corporate consultants.

MAKE IT STOP!!!!!

At some point I would like to get some answers in regards to SPAM. This infection has become so widespread that my infected accounts are being hit hundreds of times a day. Equally amazing is that it appears as though our government is making no progress in stopping it. I would have thought that if one of the presidential candidates had made SPAM control a pillar of their platform he/she would have gained several points on anyone who chose not to ignore it. I do recall hearing some discussion on the matter but not nearly enough. It takes one visit to a smut site and you are tagged for good. Bouncing them back doesn’t work. Taking your name of the list doesn’t work. Its not just porn either…its pottery barn too.
Would someone teach me how to infiltrate and destroy these spammers please? How can we take this to our elected leaders and get them to move on this? Cant we tax spam?
What the friggin hell is anybody of authority doing about this?

It’s all about the meatballs

So I made an obscenely large batch of meatballs (a’la Maryann’s recipe) for some friends of ours who just got home from the hospital with their newborn. Of course I made plenty to stash in the fridge here, too. It seems the dude’s got a thing for the meatball. With all that cayenne and garlic it’s amazing he’ll even consider them, but set one down on his highchair tray and my boy makes me proud the way he goes to town on it.
So not only is he a meatball-eating machine, and drinking milk from his perpetually sticky sippy cup, but he’s also recently aquired two-footed mobility. Not quite walking, since i think walking requires that you be able to make it to your intended destination instead of some arbitrary spot in the room. So, but anyway, here’s some vid footage for those of you itching for your fix of the bird.
