Jimmy Smith 1928-2005

Where have I been? Just got the new Rolling Stone in the mail today and read the news that Jimmy Smith died on Feb. 8th. I know that some of you are fans, did you hear of this?

odeo gearing up

It looks like podcasting is set to really tip any day now. It’ll be interesting to see what the folks at odeo can pull off.

A Healthy Sacrifice

I’m pissed. Oh baby, I’m pissed. I’ve managed to hold onto that parking space for four days already, avoiding errands and all outings that involve the use of my car. And tomorrow I am leaving for Maine, a ski week of scaring the hell out of everybody in front of me on the mountain, meatballs and red sauce, bacon and eggs, beer, a week of snow and cold and hope of seeing moose, and a week that I’d love to leave my car in that great parking spot right outside of my apartment. But my subway station is out of service this weekend, and I have to take a trip into the city because, stupid me, I’ve decided to get healthy. I have gotten involved in a contest that has given me a three month free membership to a $1,500 dollar a year gym (with a locker room that has individual showers… with individual shower doors!). Today, too soon, I have to go into the city to meet with a trainer and most likely curse my agreement to this contest. And because my laziness scale has weighed in favor of losing my parking space over taking a shuttle bus to an operational subway station to take me to the gym, I will later wince my way out of the gym, and gingerly lower myself to my car seat so I can drive back home and circle my neighborhood cursing this parking space I’m about to give up. City living ain’t easy.

TiVogration

TiVo has become totally integrated into my TV viewing. For the past month I’ve been watching an average of about 60 minutes of tele each night and, man, can i pack a lot in those 60 minutes. Typically the nightly routine is:

  • The previous night’s Daily Show
  • An episode of Family Guy
  • An episode of Good Eats

All of that in 60 minutes. Sweet. Not that I really have more than an hour to blow on tube at any point in time but sometimes on the weekends I have a little more time so i’ve got it recording Austin City Limits and a few other music related programs. It’s been a joy. I’ve had particularly good luck creating wishlists based on keywords and occasionally a really sweet music documentary just shows up on the TiVo (granted, so crap shows up, too).

However, I can sense the networks waking up to viewers like me. And they don’t like me. I’ve noticed that some shows start a minute or two early or late so I’ve got to tell TiVo to buffer my recordings with 5 minutes on each side. What really gets me mad though is that you can’t browse descriptions of the Charlie Rose show. Which means you either get a season pass to Charlie Rose or you’re s.o.l. Case in point, Charlie recently had Joe Trippi and a few other folks from the blogosphere on his show but damn it, since there are no descriptions of the show I can’t tell when it’s going to be re-aired. If anyone from Boston/Providence happens to stumble across when this will be on, let me know. I get three PBS stations so it’s got to be on one of them soon.
