Ever seen the movie The Jerk? In it, Steve Martin plays a character named “Navin” who’s pretty dim-witted. At one point, Navin is working in a gas station and a sniper starts to take shots at him. Missing, the sniper hits cans of oil. At first, Navin thinks “These cans are defective! They’re springing leaks.” His boss tells him “We don’t have defective cans, we have a defective person out there!,” at which point Navin realizes that he is the target. This is where he shouts one of the most classic movie lines, “He hates these cans! Stay away from the cans!” I can’t help but see a correlation between Navin’s outburst and the Dubya’s constant intonement that terrorists hate us because they hate freedom. It’s not our freedom they hate. It’s our dumbass, imperial foreign policy. It makes me wonder if the president is as stupid as Navin, or does he expect the rest of us to be?
